Who is ED? ED is known mostly to those who have or did or will struggle with an eating disorder or eating problem. It’s the voice in our mind that says, “Go ahead, eat the rest of the dessert, you deserve it!” Then moments after completing the treat it says, “Why did you do that! You are so fat.” Or perhaps it may say, “Of course you can eat out with your friends on Friday night, but you will have to do extra time in the gym and perhaps skip your lunch or afternoon snack.”
ED is a frenemy. You know….like one of those people who claim to be your friend yet are never there for you, talk down to you, and yet hangs out with the cool crowd. Anyone-regardles of having an eating problem or not, has befriended ED at some point in their life. He goes by many names, such as Shame, Low Self-Esteem, Low Body-Image, Worthlessness, Depression, & Low Confidence to name a few.
Not everyone who experiences Shame, Low Self-Esteem, etc. will develop an eating disorder. However, as our society become more focused on the obesity epidemic, idolizing our celebrities, and accepting of trash talking our own body shapes, more people (including children) are developing this life threatening disease. And as this number grows, more people know someone who has an eating disorder. Yet, NO ONE is talking about it!
I feel like the NBC Universal slogan is a good fit for learning about eating disorders….The More You Know.
I came across this 5 part youtube documentary on Dana that I feel is important to share. Dana is 8 and has anorexia nervosa. This mini series follows this girl and her family through an in-patient treatment center. Each part isn’t that long and is WORTH your time watching. The More You Know.
