Will my health insurance cover your services?
It is your responsibility to confirm insurance benefits.
Prior to your first appointment, please contact your insurance carrier and ask the following questions:
- Does my plan cover nutrition therapy CPT codes of 97802 and 97803?
- Is there a limit to the number of visits I am allowed?
- Do I need a referral from a primary care doctor or therapist?
- Do I need a pre-authorization?
- Is my coverage limited to specific diagnoses?
Can I pay for this class with my Health Savings Account/Flexible Spending Account
Yes. Since this is a health related expense, you can pay for copays/deductibles/co-insurance/appointment fees with your HSA/FSA.
What is Health at Every Size (HAES)?
HAES is a social justice movement working to eliminate weight stigma/fat phobia from medical care and empowering us to advocate for respectful health care treatment regardless of body size or health condition. To learn more about Health at Every Size visit the ASDAH website.
This appointment is for my child. Do they need to be present, or can it just be their grownups?
I prefer to establish a parent/provider relationship prior to working with any child or teen ages 16 and under. This means only the parent/caregivers will meet with me for a period of time until we agree it is appropriate to include the child/teen in appointments.
What if my spouse/partner doesn’t want to participate in parent coaching/family nutrition?
Though ideal to include all parents/caregivers of the child/teen it is not always realistic. Other caregivers are always welcome to join when able and are welcome to make separate appointments or schedule phone calls to ask clarifying questions and get additional support as needed.
What is Responsive Feeding Therapy (RFT)?
I really like the definition the Responsive Feeding Therapy (RFT) White Paper uses. It states, “(RFT) is an overarching approach to feeding and eating interventions applicable to multiple disciplines and across the lifespan. RFT facilitates the (re)discovery of internal cues, curiosity, and motivation, while building skills and confidence. It is flexible, prioritizes the feeding relationship, and respects and develops autonomy. Learn more here.
What is Reflective Supervision?
Reflective Supervision fosters an inclusive, empowering, and learning-oriented culture within the Supervisor/Supervisee relationship. This method enables Supervisees to evaluate and analyze their experiences, decisions, and actions. This reflective journey offers profound insights and fosters ethical and competent patient-centered care while preventing burnout, deepening rapport with clients and supporting the clinician’s growth.
What is a dietitian’s scope of practice?
A dietitian’s scope of practice includes any topic related to food, eating, body image and intersecting relationships between them and the lived experience of the client. It’s important to seek out nutrition therapy from a provider who has extensive post-collegiate training in trauma- informed care, gender-affirming care, eating disorders and mental health, as our relationships to food/eating/body image are never just about food/eating/body image. It is also important that they have completed training in one or more mental health therapeutic modality such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and others.
